About Me

I’m Ernest Henry Flancia — a music educator and performer passionate about sharing my love for music and percussion to inspire those around me. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to receive various scholarships and awards, including the Kaede Cultural Society of Calgary Award, the Calgary Pro Musica Chamber Music Award, and the F.M. McLeod Prize.

I earned my Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance with Distinction from the University of Calgary in 2024, where I studied under Rod Squance, Tyler Hornby, and Chris Sies, exploring classical, jazz, and contemporary styles. During my time there, I served as both Concertmaster and Principal Percussionist of the University of Calgary’s Wind Ensemble for two years, and I regularly teach percussion clinics for high schools across Alberta, as well as at Mount Royal University.

Currently, I’m the director of the Notre Dame High School Percussion Ensemble, which I co-founded in 2023 with the school’s band director, Ben Schneider.

In my earlier years, I dedicated myself to growing as a musician by serving as the Musical Director for my church, where I led the choir for four years through community leadership and volunteer work.

As a performer, I’ve had the privilege of playing with several prominent ensembles, including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, Calgary Wind Symphony, Firebird Symphony, Westwinds Wind Orchestra, Calgary Musicscapes Band, Ammolite Opera, and the St. Giles Orchestra. I’ve also had the honor of being a featured soloist with the Calgary Korean Canadian Choir.

I’m also one half of a Calgary-based percussion duo, H2 Percussion, which I co-founded with my good friend Henry Wu. Together, we’ve performed at new music festivals such as the Sound Atlas Festival.
